Reflection on Personal Passions/Interests
This assignment was to identify a specific passion and describe what it means to you and what you would like to do with it and where you would like to go. For me, this passion is theater.
What?
A huge passion of mine is theater. I have been involved in many shows and productions though my high school years. Eight shows to be exact. I have been anything from an ensemble member to one of the leads. It doesn’t really matter to me what part I get because I have fun and enjoy just being on stage in any way possible. I was in 3 musicals, 4 plays, and 1 improv show. By far my favorite was Alice in Wonderland. That was the play I did senior year. I was “The White Chess Queen” (who is the lead right after Alice) and that was really what brought my love and passion for theater to where it is now.
So What?
If I were to say that theater was just something I did, that would be a huge understatement. It was more than that. It filled every moment of freedom I had. August to October was a play, January to March was a musical, and April to May was another play. I didn’t play sports or join many other extracurricular activities because the one I really cared about was theater. It started as an escape for me in high school but it grew to be so much more than that. It originally was just a thing that I did to fill my spare time so I wouldn’t have to be at home but by the time I graduated it was one of the most important things in my life. I made many friends through theater but more importantly I found myself. It’s kind of silly that I found myself through being other people but I learned who I really was and what I really cared about. I honestly don’t think I’d be the person I am today if I hadn’t joined theater. It made me happy and I felt like I had found a purpose for myself. I loved making other people happy and entertaining them. When I think about my four years in high school I can’t help but to think about all the time I spent in my school’s theater.
So What?
I would love to continue with this through college and onto the rest of my life. I would like to be able to find a community theater that I could be a part of. It is something that I really miss doing and I can’t wait to start again. I am currently looking into groups and other things available at UC that I could possibly be a part of and continue with this huge passion of mine. I would really like to be able to learn more about the history of theater. I took a class in high school that talked about the Greeks and what they did but it also covered other things besides theater. I’m looking for classes that focus on theater history and what it meant to cultures throughout history. I really love theater and I want it to be a part of my life again.
