Year in Review: Second Year (2015-2016)
What? So What?
I love traveling. Going anywhere outside of Cincinnati is so much fun for me. I especially love traveling outside of the United States. So in December 2015, I took another trip out of the country. For me this trip was the most impactful part of my second year at UC. This time I had the opportunity to travel to England and France. While I was there I was able to visit places from World War II and museums. This was extremely special to me because both of my maternal great-grandfathers were involved with the War in some way. One met his wife while serving in Europe and the other helped save a man’s life in the hospital where he worked. This experience taught me that there is so much more to history than what you read in books. When you read a book or learn about history in class, it is hard to imagine the facts are actually real people but when you see the places they fought and died, it becomes real. This trip helped me see how different life is in the United States. Almost everything in England was listed in multiple languages while in the US it is mainly in English with Spanish occasionally. By traveling again, I have noticed a pattern in my life. This is that traveling helps me better understand the things I experience in my daily life. I am becoming more sensitive to the issues both inside of the US and in other countries because I know what life is like in other places.
Now What?
A goal I have set for myself in this upcoming year is to try to be more outgoing. I do not know many people at UC so I do not talk to anyone besides my friends. When I have managed to step out of my comfort zone, I have met amazing people. I want to work on doing this on a more consistent basis. Something that goes along with this is that I want to again advise myself to try and make more friends. That would help me be a happier and less lonely and bored person. Since I do not know many people and I do not have many friends, I spend almost all of my free time by myself. So I want to give that piece of advice to myself for the upcoming year. Be more outgoing and try to make more friends. Lastly, I want to use what I have learned these past two years in the psychology major to help the people I work with. Many of them are struggling through either something at home or emotionally. I like helping people through the hard times in their lives. I believe that this is one of my talents and the things I have learned at UC have enhanced it.
