The Roman Experience
Going into spring semester of 2018, I thought I was starting my final semester and I was planning on graduating in May. With this idea in mind, I wanted to take one last trip outside of the USA. I took the honors class The Roman Experience and this class has a trip to Naples and Rome, Italy. I ended up dropping a class and I am taking it over the summer and I will be graduating in August 2018.
I decided to take this class for two reasons. The first reason is that I have been to Europe once before with UC and I loved it so I wanted to go back. The second reason is that ever since I was a little kid I have loved Greek and Roman ancient history and mythology. So the opportunity to visit some of the places I had read about was too good to pass up. Another aspect of the class was architecture and engineering. I am not very interested in these things but my father is an engineer so I wanted to learn about it and take pictures of the buildings to show him.
While in Italy, we visited Naples where we saw the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. These cities were destroyed and covered in ash and mud by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The cities appear to be frozen in time because the volcanic activity buried the cities and everything inside of them for hundreds of years. After Naples, we traveled to Rome. While in Rome, we visited all of the historical sites like the Trevi Fountain, the Coliseum, the Forum, the Pantheon, the Parthenon, and the Vatican. I was especially excited to visit the Vatican. My grandma is Catholic and I always get her a rosary in every country I visit and I knew she would love one from the Vatican and she cried when I gave it to her.
Taking this class was very interesting and I loved the trip. Even though I do not understand much about architecture and engineering, it was really fascinating. Now I know much more about how buildings have been built throughout history and how they are able to withstand the test of time. I am very happy that I decided to take this class as my final trip with UC and UHP.
This is my final project for my class. I built the Trevi Fountain out of LEGOS.
