Year in Review: First Year (2014-2015)
What? So What?
Throughout the 2014-2015 school year I had many new experiences and fun things that I had not done before. For me the most impactful and significant event was my trip to Mexico in December 2014. I took a class during the fall semester where we studied the Maya and their culture and history. Then we had the opportunity to go and visit the places that we spent so much time learning about. This was the most significant experience for me because I have always wanted to go to Mexico but I have never had the chance. I am minoring in Spanish so this trip really helped me practice my Spanish skills. This also opened my eyes to how fortunate I am. Many of the people in Mexico are poor and have hard working jobs. I see myself now as someone who has more than enough. Also I have used my Spanish skills outside of Mexico and other talents that I have to impact the community around me. At my job there are often Hispanic customers who have a hard time ordering their food because they barely speak any English. I often can step in and help the customer order because I speak enough Spanish that I can understand what they are saying and help translate for my coworkers.
Now What?
I have learned many things this past school year, both academically and personally. I also learned some things that I would like to share with myself to help me in the upcoming academic year. Academically I would like to advise myself to make homework and work outside of the classroom more of a priority. Instead of putting it off until the last minute or ignoring it completely I want to make it important and try to do it as soon as possible. In doing this I would learn more and understand the subject material better. Personally I would like to advise myself to put myself out there or to step out of my comfort zone. I tend to be very shy when it comes to talking to people I do not know. This stops me from making new connections and friends that could be beneficial for me in the long run. Along with these things I have set myself a goal for this upcoming school year. I would like to join a theater group or take a class or some how get involved in theater and acting. During high school I participated in about eight shows and it was my favorite thing to do. Since beginning college and graduating high school I have not had the chance to be involved in theater in any way. I have been meaning to join a community theater group or group at UC but I keep forgetting and putting it off because I do not want to talk to people that I do not know. Finally, I plan on using not just this talent of acting but also other talents, like my Spanish skills, that I have as well to impact the community around me. I will use them to help talk and connect with people that I might not have had the chance to if I did not show myself and demonstrate how the things that I can do might be able to help others with struggles that they have and help them overcome obstacles in their life.
